Currently Belinda is making her first sculptural piece with the assistance of sculptor/fabricator Jeph Neil. The photos show the various stages of production with the final bronze object to be cast by Coates and Wood foundry and to be exhibited as part of the Melbourne Art Fair exhibition 'Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt' 2008. Final images available soon!
In late 2007 Belinda undertook a month long artist in residency at the Fremantle Art Centre in Western Australia. The photos attached show the progression of the project. The final works and exhibtion can be seen in the WORKS page.
Late 2006 Belinda was commissioned by the new Crown Casino in Macau to produce nine original artworks for the VIP gaming areas. Positive images of Lotus flowers, the auspicious
Phoenix
bird, and mountain settings are key features of this series. ‘The aim was to provide the guests with good energy and beautiful icons based on Asian cultures that would harmonies with the architectural design’.
In May/June 2006 Belinda traveled to
Beijing
and Far Western Tibet. The first 5 days were spent in
Beijing
exploring historical sites and contemporary art galleries. From
Beijing
the tour flew to
Lhasa
the capital of
Tibet
. After fours days of acclimatizing and sight seeing in
Lhasa
the journey of traveling west by 4wd began. The amazing trip traveled to the sacred
mountain
of
Kailas
and further west to the ancient ruins of the
Guge
Kingdom
. On the return trip the tour stopped at the Everest Base Camp. On the whole it was a diverse, hard traveling but an incredibly inspiring tour.
Following the journey to
Tibet
, Belinda spent the month of July at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute making art work for the first two weeks and working as a printer for the final two weeks of her residency. The first two weeks Belinda was given a guest workshop to make her own images. All printmaking techniques were at her disposal, however she decided to focus on the flocking technique. For the artist this was a great new technique to learn whilst at the STPI. The two weeks were very productive having completed seven images (that reflect her travels to
Tibet
) and a start on a major installation that will be launched at the Mildura Art Centre in June 2007. For a sneak peak on the images created go to WORKS page. The final two weeks were equally inspiring and rewarding for the artist working as a guest printer with the STPI team on a major project with famous Korean Artist Chun Kwang Young. Mr. Chun was in the STPI studio for three weeks publishing a number of paper pulp images and a series of monotype etchings. The etchings which Belinda collaborated on were the largest single panel images the STPI have done to date and certainly the largest Belinda had even printed too! Being 2.5 meters large (the copper plate) the project was quite an experience to say the least. Mr. Chun was also the most internationally acclaimed artist Belinda has worked with to date and the opportunity to work with such an accomplished artist was a great honor. Working alongside the fantastic printing team at STPI was also a great experience, during her stay many ideas, techniques and tricks were shared and exchanged. In September the images will be launched at the STPI gallery. For more info go to: www.stpi.com.sg
In 2004 Belinda initiated an ambitious publishing project that bought together the prestigious Crown Point Press,
USA
, Australian artist Dorothy Napangardi and Gallery Gondwana,
Australia
. The project brought master printer Dena Schuckit of Crown Point Press to
Australia
for the first time to work with Dorothy Napangardi on a series of images that were published by Crown Point Press and Gallery Gondwana. Both Dena and Belinda worked with Dorothy to produce the plates at the
National
Art
School
in
Sydney
. Thereafter the plates were sent to
USA
to be editioned at the Crown Point Press studios. In turn Dorothy (for her first time) and Belinda (with funding from the Ian Potter Cultural Trust) traveled to the
USA
to complete the project. This was the first time Crown Point Press had worked with an Australian artist. These amazing images were launched in both countries with great success. To read more about the project go to the Text page to read Sue Forster’s article from the Imprint magazine. You can also go to www.crownpoint.com or www.gallerygondwana.com.au for more info on the images produced.
Port Jackson Press
Australia
For six years Belinda worked as the workshop manager of the renowned publishing house Port Jackson Press
Australia
(1999 -2005). During those years Belinda was privileged to work alongside many great artists including John Olsen, Tim Storrier, David Larwill, Christine Johnson, Rona Green, Susan Pickering, Margie Sheppard, Mark Schaller, and Robert Jacks to name a few. Although there were many, below are two highlights of her time with the company:
In 2005 Belinda made a series of three images for Port Jackson Press as an artist. This was her sixth publishing project with the company. It was a great pleasure for Belinda to collaborate as an artist with fellow printers Sophia Szilagyi and Trent Walter on this series of images.
In 2002 as the workshop manager of Port Jackson Press
Australia
, Belinda traveled with art manager and writer Ken McGregor and printer John Neeson to conduct a publishing project with senior Australian artist John Olsen. At John Olsen’s home studio we set up a make-shift studio where he produced 7 images that depicted his beloved city of
Sydney
and his memories of the place. For two weeks both Belinda and John Neeson collaborated with John Olsen to make some of the most ambitious prints the artist had made in recent years. The series was launched in Sydney and Melbourne to great acclaim. To find out more information about the suite go to www.portjacksonpress.com.au or read ‘Teeming with Life’ by Ken McGregor.
In 2002 Belinda traveled to the
USA
for three weeks with Australian curator Kirsten Rann to explore the prestigious print studios in
New York
,
LA
, and
San Francisco
. The trip included visits to Pace Editions, ULAE, Two Palms Press, Gemini G.E.L and Crown Point Press where Belinda spent five days during their annual summer workshop. The workshop afforded Belinda time and the opportunity to make a new series of prints (see recent editions page) and learn new techniques from the master printers at the press. To find out more info on summer workshops at Crown Point Press go to: www.crownpoint.com
In 2000 Belinda traveled for the first time to
Darwin
to undertake a mentorship residency at Basil Hall Editions (with funding from Arts Victoria). For three weeks Belinda worked alongside master printer Basil Hall and artists Banduk Marika, Dorothy Napangardi, and local artists from the
Daily
River
community in NT. The mentorship allowed Belinda to learn valuable skills from a master printer and experience first hand the indigenous printmaking scene in
Australia
. To find out more about Basil Hall go to: www.basilhalleditions.com.au
